One of our favourite and supremely talented stallholders, Sarah from B.Artizan creates the most fabulous and totally unique handmade cards, jewellery, accessories and gifts, more often than not using recycled and repurposed fabrics, leathers and other items. Find out a little bit more about Sarah, here…
Have you always been into arts and craft endeavours?
I have certainly always enjoyed drawing, painting and making things. One of my early memories as a child was making myself a pair of high-heeled sandals from cardboard and papier-mâché! You can make anything if you put your mind to it!
What led you to start your business?
I spent ten years in the fashion industry working different roles, including work as a designer, pattern cutter and garment technologist. I was happy with the level I had reached as a garment technologist and felt after four years in the role it was time for a change. My husband really encouraged me to try something new, that would give me a chance to be more creative and so I began my little business.
How long have you been trading for?
I’ve now been working at my handmade business for three years! And still enjoy it as much as the day I started!
What would you say is your speciality or what do you love to create the most?
This wasn’t really planned, but as time has gone by, I’ve realised I love to repurpose unwanted items, using them to create something beautiful. I first started by using fabric that the fashion industry was throwing out during my time there. Then I began experimenting with my grandad’s old stamp collection to make unique pieces of artwork.
Since then people just started giving me items they don’t want wasted but no longer have a use for. So much of my work is very eco-friendly as a very high percentage of what I use is recycled. It certainly takes a lot of time, but I love the challenge each item presents.
This love of repurposing has also led to collaborating with my customers to make unique artwork from collections of items from their loved ones. I think it’s a lovely way to remember someone special.
What’s next for B.Artizan?
The run up to Christmas is completely chock-a-block with Christmas fairs and markets, so I am currently designing and making new products for these events. Christmas is by far my favourite season, so I’m really excited about it!
Where can people find you, other than fairs?
You can find a selection of my products on my website: https://b-artizan.square.site/, but as much of my work is so unique, I am not able to list it all on there. So, I always suggest keeping an eye on my social media pages - especially my Instagram @b.artizan, for live updates of what I’m working on.
That way you can message me about anything you see and snap up unique creations before anyone else has the chance to buy them!
